Typographic OCD

PC/TM-"Family Jokes"

Sometimes you hang out late at night with a friend and you both start a dark exmperimental ambient project and call it PC/TM. Then you record a song and call it "Family Jokes" by means of some weird black magic name assembly ritual and finally you spend a whole evening comping layouts for said project and come up with something very basic and kind of nice.

Only sometimes though.

Bonfires for Nobody-Moments Like These

Above is a cover idea presented for a friend's band called "Bonfires for Nobody". The music is of ambient and instrumental nature and is definitely the type that I enjoy personally. There are some inflections of complicated jazz scales and improvisations as well. When I approached this cover I was thinking a lot of the ECM covers of the 70's and beyond. Their use of brilliantly minimal typography has an almost mystic quality that I have always enjoyed and felt suited the style of music present in this album.

Although this project is currently on hiatus, this cover is the direction that will most likely be refined in the coming months.

Fontshop Record Cover Reviews

FontShop has a great and extensive blog entry on typography on recent record covers here. A spellbinding read. A couple covers I have been immediately magnetized too, including, The Chemical Brothers, Delta Spirit, Stars, Wolf Parade, and Delphic all make an appearence. I have to say though, the cover for Teenage Fanclub's "Shadows" is a work of refined and subtle art. I have never heard the band...but I might just buy the record to have that lovely cover. The Tift Merrit cover definitely wins some Paul awards as well.
